Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca (UBB) reaffirms its position as a national leader in sustainability, according to the latest international rankings in this field.
UBB ranks first in Romania in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2025, published in December, ranking 287th worldwide out of a total of 1,745 universities evaluated.
UBB also ranks first nationally in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026, published in November, ranking 318th globally out of a total of 2,022 universities included.
Both the UI GreenMetric and QS Sustainability Rankings evaluate universities based on criteria essential for sustainable development, measuring institutional impact in the main sub-areas of sustainability—social, economic, and environmental. The indicators analyzed include, among others, combating climate change through responsible management of university infrastructure, energy efficiency, waste management and recycling, contributing to sustainable development through education and research, and promoting equity and inclusion through institutional policies and practices.
“These results reflect the sustained efforts of Babeș-Bolyai University in recent years to take on an active and responsible role in society, with a positive impact on both the community and the protection and conservation of the environment. At the same time, they reveal the stronger and stronger academic focus on research and relevant education in the field of sustainability, recognised internationally,” says UBB Rector Prof. Adrian Petrușel, PhD.
In turn, the vice-rector responsible for quality and entrepreneurship, Prof. Levente Szász, PhD, states that “for UBB, these rankings are not only a recognition, but also an important monitoring tool and strategic guidance, which help us develop programs and projects capable of supporting the long-term trajectory of the university as a responsible, competitive, and sustainable institution with a positive impact on the community.”
